Why use travel time is better than distance?
Shapes change depending on chosen transport mode & time of day
A radius is created when drawing a straight line from a central point to all possible points in a
circle. It’s useful for searching where’s nearby, assuming it’s possible to travel as the crow
Creating a distance radius map
The tool lets you draw circles around a point on a Leaflet map. Adjust the size of the circle using
the drop down box and select your location by typing in the box. You can create a miles radius or a
km radius map
Drawing a travel time radius
If you want to see where’s reachable ‘within X minutes’ by car or public transport you can also use
this tool. Once you’ve made a distance radius just click the public transport button. We calculate
the travel time map area based on our TravelTime API. Learn more about the API here. You
can then use the drop down to adjust the number of minutes spent travelling or click ‘view reachable
by driving’ to see a drive time area. The area calculated assumes the person sets off at 9am and can
travel from the starting point to the end point using real routes, not in a straight line. This is
rarely a perfect circle.

To adjust the departure time or add more than 1 area on the same map try our TravelTime Maps tool.
You can search for points of interest within the area or find overlapping areas between 2 start
points and more.
